Freezing baby food in portions: the practical guide

Baby food freezes well in portions - most easily in small silicone moulds with around 30 ml per cavity. That way you take out only the portion you need and do not have to thaw the whole batch. It saves time and reduces food waste.

Why freeze baby food in portions?

  • You cook once and have several meals prepared.
  • You thaw only as much as you need.
  • Less is left over that has to be thrown away.

How much purée per portion?

That depends on your child's age and appetite. Small cavities let you start with single cubes and combine several if needed. For questions about amounts and your child's diet, ask your paediatrician or a nutrition adviser.

Storage time and labelling

Label every batch with the date. According to the Swiss Society for Nutrition (SGE, page in German), home-made purée can be kept in the fridge for up to 24 hours or, ideally straight after preparation, frozen for up to 2 months. Fruit purée made from cooked fruit and vegetable purée, for example, are suitable for freezing. Purée containing milk is not suitable for freezing.

The right mould: FlexForm Helmu

The FlexForm Helmu has 12 cavities of 30 ml. You fill in the purée, put the lid on, freeze it and push out single portions when needed. The mould is made of BPA-free platinum silicone, freezer-safe to -50 °C, oven-safe to +250 °C and dishwasher-safe. The metal rim gives stability when filling and carrying.

Step by step

  1. Prepare the purée and let it cool completely.
  2. Fill it into the cavities, not up to the rim.
  3. Put the lid on, label and freeze.
  4. Push out the frozen portions and store them in a container if needed.
  5. Thaw or heat a portion, stir well before feeding and check the temperature.

Hygiene notes (general information, not advice)

  • Let the purée cool before freezing.
  • Do not refreeze purée that has been thawed.
  • Heat thoroughly before feeding and check the temperature.

Common questions

Can I heat the purée directly in the mould?
The mould is oven-safe to +250 °C. For the microwave, please transfer the purée to a microwave-safe container, as the mould has a metal rim. Always heat baby food thoroughly and stir well afterwards.

Which mould suits larger amounts?
For larger portions the FlexForm Dori with 260 ml per mould is a good choice.
